Why would I need sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is most commonly recommended for patients who have dental anxiety. Anxiety about going to the dentist is very common, and affects an estimated 10-20% of the population. In severe cases, dental anxiety can keep patients from getting the dental care they need.

Whether you have minor or severe dental anxiety, sedation can help. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation at our office, you will feel more comfortable and disconnected from what’s happening around you, but you’ll still be completely conscious and responsive to commands.

Combining laughing gas with topical numbing agents also ensures that you will experience no pain or discomfort during your procedure. This means sedation is a good option if you have a low pain tolerance, or are scared of needles.

Sedation may also be recommended if you’re having multiple dental procedures performed at once, since it will make it easier for you to stay comfortable while sitting in the dentist’s chair for 1-2 hours or more.

how long does laughing gas last?

Laughing gas wears off within about 5 minutes after your treatment ends. It has no significant side effects beyond minor headaches, nausea, dizziness, and confusion, which pass quickly. You can drive yourself home or even go back to work after your appointment.

This makes laughing gas a great option if you have a busy schedule, and may not have the time to take a full day off after being sedated with a more powerful sedative medication. Other types of sedation, like IV sedation and oral conscious sedation, usually require you to bring someone with you to the office to drive you home, and their after-effects typically last 4-6 hours or longer.
