How Do I Best Use My Dental Insurance & Get Affordable Treatment?

Even if you have dental insurance, you may be worried about the cost of dental treatment. Lots of dental procedures can be expensive, so it’s a good idea to know how to make the most of your plan. Get more details in this blog from Carlson Family Dentistry now.

1. Pick A Dentist In Your Insurance Network

First of all, it’s a good idea to make sure your preferred dentist is in your insurance network. While most PPO plans allow you to see any dentist, you will usually pay more for treatment if they’re not part of the PPO organization.

At Carlson Family Dentistry, we are in-network with Delta Premier and Cigna, two of the most popular dental insurance options in Littleton and the surrounding area.

2. Take Advantage Of Free Oral Exams & Teeth Cleanings Twice Per Year

Most dental plans cover two teeth cleanings and oral exams per year, along with a set of annual x-rays. Kids may get some additional benefits like fluoride treatments and dental sealants, too.

Make sure to take advantage of this. These “free” treatments are what you’re paying your insurance company for, so make sure you come to Carlson Family Dentistry twice per year. If you don’t, you won’t be making the most of your benefits.

3. Know The 100/80/50 Rule For Dental Insurance

Most dental plans cover:

  • 100% of preventive care like teeth cleanings
  • 80% of “minor” treatments like fillings and root canals
  • 50% of “major” treatment like crowns and dental bridges

This is known as the “100/80/50” rule. Basically, the less serious your dental health issue is, the less you’ll pay out-of-pocket. This is another reason why it’s important to see a dentist twice a year for a checkup! Catching a potential issue early can save you lots of money.

4. Consider Your Yearly Deductible & Annual Maximum

Your yearly deductible is the amount you must pay out of pocket before your plan kicks in and begins covering treatment costs. This is usually between $25 and $250. Once you reach this deductible, your insurance will pay out until you hit your annual maximum.

As the name implies, the annual maximum is the total amount your plan will pay toward your dental care in a given year. It’s usually around $1,000 to $2,000. If you exceed this amount in a calendar year, your dental insurance will no longer cover any expenses, and you’ll need to pay for them out-of-pocket.
